Giant sequoias are the largest trees in the world. These coniferous trees, which can reach heights of 90 meters, have been living on Earth for approximately 200 million years. Natural history research shows that these trees lived during the same period as dinosaurs. Although dinosaurs became extinct millions of years ago, sequoias are still alive today. The cones are green at first, but turn brown as they dry. The cones contain seeds. When the cones dry and open, these seeds are scattered around the environment.
Sequoias used to grow in many different parts of the world. There is even evidence that sequoias once lived in Çamlıdere, a district of Ankara. A few years ago, fossils from a petrified forest dating back approximately 18 million years were found in Çamlıdere. Among these fossils were those belonging to sequoia trees. Thus, researchers concluded that this tree once grew naturally in our country. Today, sequoias do not grow naturally in our country; they are only cultivated in specially established parks and gardens. The only place where giant sequoias grow naturally is the state of California in the United States. Some areas in California where these giant trees grow have been designated as national parks. One of these parks is Sequoia National Park in California. The giant sequoia, considered the largest living tree in the world, is also in this park. This tree is 83 meters tall and its trunk circumference is over 31 meters. The tree is thought to be between 2,000 and 2,500 years old.
