One day, the trees in the forest decided they wanted a king.
First, they asked the olive tree: “Dear olive tree, will you be our king and rule over us?”
The olive tree shook its branches. “I make delicious oil that everyone loves. Why should I stop to be your king?”
Next, the trees approached the grand fig tree. “Mighty fig tree,” they said, “will you be our king?”
The fig tree rustled its large leaves. “Why would I give up my sweet fruits just to rule over you?”
They traveled until they found the strong oak tree. “Brave oak, will you be our king?”
The oak tree sighed sadly. “My life is too short. Humans cut me down for wood. I cannot be your king.”
The trees grew sad and hopeless. “We’ll never find a king!” they cried.
Just then, a pinecone fell right in front of them. They looked up and saw the pine tree standing tall and graceful.
Together, they whispered, “Pine tree, you are the most beautiful of all the trees. Please be our king.”
The pine tree smiled gently and accepted.
From that day on, the pine tree has been known as the king of the forest.
