There are many different kinds of houses in many parts of the world! Some of these houses have very interesting features that others don’t. This is because people’s habits, needs, and the characteristics of the region they live in influence the shape and materials of their houses. But wherever and however they are built, houses primarily serve to protect people from snow, rain, wind, or sun. How about getting to know some of these different kinds of houses?
Tukul refers to huts made of dried reeds and straw. Tukuls are found in Africa, especially in Ethiopia. These round-shaped huts are built without the use of tools such as nails and hammers.
Japanese House:
These houses are made of bamboo. The interior walls are made of paper-thin materials. The interior walls are designed to be movable and can be used as doors.
Grass Houses:
Grass houses have been used in Iceland since ancient times. These houses are made of stone and earth. Grass is planted on their earthen roofs. This makes the houses warm in winter and cool in summer.
Venetian Houses:
Venice is a city built on islands in Italy. The city has many canals, just like its streets. People travel on these canals in boats called “gondolas.” Some of the houses in the city are even built on the water! Most of these houses have two doors. One of these doors opens to the street, and the other to the canal.
Floating Houses of Cambodia:

Igloos:
The Inuit people living in the Arctic call their houses “igloos.” The Arctic is covered in ice and snow. Therefore, the Inuit build their houses from ice and snow. How? First, they make bricks from ice or snow. They put these together as shown in the photo. Then, they fill the gaps between the bricks with snow.
Yurt:
These large tents used in Central Asia are called “yurts.” Those who live in these yurts move from time to time depending on the season. They transport their yurts either by dismantling them or by pulling them with the help of wheels. Yurts have a wooden frame. The outside of this frame is covered with a type of fabric called “felt.” The felt is so thick that it can protect the inside of the yurt from the cold.

In the past, people carved houses into the rocks in Cappadocia. Today, many of these houses are used as hotels. Rock houses are very cool in the summer. Therefore, some of them are also used as storage areas for fruits during hot summer days.
